A bag of polyhedral dice, spilled open

Random TTRPG Thoughts #1

Back on my personal blog, which is defunct at this point, I used to have a series called “Random Thoughts.” I thought maybe it would be fun to try my hand at sharing some random TTRPG thoughts with the world on DM Tales. And so, here were are.

It’s Friday, and I’ve had coffee. These are random thoughts.

  1. Sometimes you set up a game, and no one commits so you have to cancel. This sucks.
  2. I used to hate the thought of not rolling dice as a GM because I didn’t think I;d have any fun. One session of Numenera has changed my mind.
  3. Does anyone else not get why the line between game types is between “crunchy” and “narrative” games? I mean, playing the game is collaborative story-telling by design.
  4. I’m going to be at PaxU in December. Who else is going to be there?
  5. Last night at my Basic Fantasy RPG table on player said, “Hey, we went for an entire day without hurting anyone. That’s like a record.” For the record, that’s not actually true, but the last few sessions have been moving through occupied territory so, there’s been a lot of walking into ambushes (they don’t sneak well).
  6. I think a better demarcation line between game types is something along the lines of “chaos embracing” and “plot driven.”
  7. There are so many games to play.
  8. I’ve neither read nor played any games by Chaosium. I need to rectify this.
  9. I’m 60 pages in to Monte Cook Games’ The Strange, and I love it.
  10. Two games I need to play are Symbaroum and Dragonbane. I’m impressed with both for different reasons.

  1. I was long overdue to experience Call of Cthulhu, given how far back into RPG history it goes, but that finally changed last year. I don’t know how different the 7th Edition mechanics are from previous editions, but it was an enjoyable departure from 3d6. Now I just have to try Tunnels & Trolls.

      • BRP is fine, if a bit generic. I’d recommend trying either Runequest (for the amazing setting) or Pendragon (for the multigenerational play). There are cheap quickstart editions of both.
CoC is a popular version of Chaosium’s D100 system, but I think there are better games to play the mythos with these days.
