Random TTRPG Thoughts #42

Allergy season is in full swing, so incoming weather fronts give me a sinus headache so bad I need to lie down. As I wait for my morning elixir to help clear away my brain fog, the electric impulses in my brain are moving like a neutrino trying to escape the depths of the sun. These are random TTRPG thoughts.

  1. I’ve run a lot of pre-written adventures lately, both for Numenera and Dragonbane. It’s a different experience and I’ve enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
  2. I’m still hoping to get to Gamehole Con in 2025.
  3. I have a pile of super hero games and/or supplements to read, review, and play. I’m rather excited by this prospect.
  4. I have a weird location I’m working on for my Numenera campaign, I just need to find time to sit down and flesh it out. I also might redo the map I made.
  5. I’m running a Shadowdark Gauntlet on Saturday. I’ve got a kitchen timer for the torch timer, and I think I may use the Minecraft torch in my son’s room to pass initiative. This should be fun!
  6. My appreciation for different styles of RPG has expanded the more I’ve read and played different games. I recommend spreading a wide TTRPG net to everyone.
  7. One of the cool things about the hobby nowadays is that the little communities we build through it aren’t limited to who plays at our table. We can meet folks at conventions, and stay connected through discord. We can accept invitations to play systems we haven’t tried, and experience other play styles. And, for GM, we have access to a huge pool folks off of which we can bound ideas. It’s pretty cool.
  8. Someone at my church handed me some cash and said, “I want to pay for two players to come on Saturday, and then use the rest for Booksmiles.org.” So I’ve got two tickets for Ecclesicon: Day of Adventure I’m giving away. Anyone in the Philly/South Jersey area interested?
  9. My last two months have been filled with sorrow and grief because I’ve been caring for a lot of folks who have lost loved ones (and I’m among those who have lost loved ones). There have been two things which have buoyed me in this season, and the one that’s not linked to my vocation is my TTRPG hobby. Recreation is important. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
  10. If you think you might like to try GMing a game, do it. Folks think they can’t “think up stuff” but it’s really not true. Also, that’s not what the improv part of GMing is. You’re not thinking up stuff out of nowhere, you’re riffing off of what folks are doing, bending a world because of someone’s actions. We do that in real life all the time by instinct. Whenever we anticipate what folks around us are doing, and respond accordingly, it’s a skill that’s very much like GMing. It’s just that you have to take notes at the table so you can later recall that one thing on which people will fixate.
  11. What is the meaning of life, the universe, and everything?
