Random TTRPG Thoughts #50

The “holidays” are nigh and my introverted brain has begun its slow descent into sensory overload-induced flight or fight mode. But coffee and games are there to keep my brain from a complete implosion. These are random TTRPG thoughts…for the fiftieth time!

  1. Never say “Now I’ve seen everything” when you’re GMing. In my latest Numenera session one player had his character taking a poll as part of a murder investigation. But, because he neglected to noted someone who gave an unexpected reply, he was revealing a sampling bias.
  2. Looks like Bluesky is taking off. I really don’t know what took people so long. My DM Tales account is here. I’m also on Mastodon.
  3. Something about the Sentinel Comics RPG clicked with me. I tore through the book and loved reviewing it.
  4. TTRPG TikTok has some interesting folks and good interaction, which I’ve enjoyed. I do ignore a lot of AI stuff and people doing various roulette things, which seem to be popular. I’m enjoying being on the platform more than I ever thought I would.
  5. My Cypher System Super Hero lunch session was a lot of fun. We ended mid-fight, after a big setback for the duo of heroes who played. I can’t wait for the next one!
  6. I’m growing more and more comfortable setting up situations and inviting players to fill in the details, and Numenera/Cypher System has been instrumental in this growth. As GM I still create the big picture world. I set which ancestries and classes exist, if there are such things. I also give it the backstory and nations and deities (if it’s that type of world). But I don’t really need to sweat creating every point of interest in a town or city before play. If the players want to visit a shop I can either say “yay” or “nay,” or leave it up to the dice. If said shop or location exists, the players get to name it and off we go.
  7. I’ve been taking my session notes by hand for the last six months or so and I really like it. I’m doing it on my iPad because I hate the clutter paper causes, but they’re still hand-written.
  8. The Freeform app on my iPad is actually rather wonderful for keeping my session notes. It’s kind of like Prezi meets a physical notebook. It does need folders to organize my pages, though.
  9. OK, picture me like Kylo Ren shouting “MORE,” in Last Jedi—but less creepy and in a better film. Submit your events/games/chats for Ecclesicon in Palmyra, NJ March 28-30! I want more!
  10. My Thursday night game has been on hiatus for way too long. I’m getting twitchy.
