It’s been a…couple of weeks. The world of idiocracy has somehow become real, my regular games have been on hiatus, and I’m getting a bit twitchy. These are random TTRPG thoughts.
- There are times when I read a TTRPG book and it just clicks. Sentinel Comics RPG is one of those books. It just, works for me.
- I got to run Cypher System for a super hero session this week. It was a blast. Cypher’s power shifts make super heroes a lot of fun.
- So I’ve been working a “chaos style” of adventure running over the past month. I come with zero plan. All I set up are a series of tables which set up situations, including the starting point and the big problem, and identify obstacles. We roll at the table and work from there. In-between the tables making the next big decision players drive the story with things they create. I keep a running log and elements from one session, like NPCs we created or consequences from player actions, may end up in the tables for the next sessions. And, yah, it’s all a riff off the way old school games tend to populate dungeons.
- I’m running a Numenera adventure in Monte Cook’s room at PaxU on Friday. I’m freaking out just a bit.
- I downloaded Advanced FASERIP last week. I actually make take the fourth spot in Supervember. The new Marvel Multiverse RPG just doesn’t click with me and FASERIP has always been a favorite system of mine.
- I used to look cross-eyed at games which did use the same sorts of stats as D&D. Now I coming to prefer them.
- There are too many games on my shelf that I’ve yet to play. This is a flaw which must be corrected.
- I’m enjoying using “chaos style” for my Cypher sessions because the system is just set up to work with it. To set up an encounter all I need to say is, “Here’s [obstacle] it’s level 4, and there’s some minions grouped together as level 4 opponent but they attack as level 6.” And then we just flesh it out as we go.
- I need to play more games that use the Year Zero Engine. It’s fast and fun.
- Ecclesicon 2025, March 28-30 in Palmyra, NJ! Come run a game!
