Random TTRPG Thoughts #52

It’s the week after Thanksgiving and this introvert’s most-feared nemesis has been unleashed. The Holidays. The coffee, it helps. These are random TTRPG thoughts.

  1. I’m an introvert who loves quiet and solitude. But I run a YouTube channel, run two campaigns, and am looking forward to PaxUnplugged this week! I never said I was consistent.
  2. After an unintentional month off, my Dragonbane campaign is starting up again this week. Yay!
  3. My little one wanted to play No Thank You, Evil! on Black Friday. I was hoping he’d want to play Dragonbane or try Sentinel Comics RPG, but he loves NTYE for both its free form nature and short sessions. He was also playing (at the table, not in the game) as his hamster. The kid’s got an active imagination.
  4. I have never run a PC for a Cypher System/Numenera game. I’m hoping I can change that this week at PaxU. I love running the system, it may have become my favorite, but I enjoy rolling dice as well. But there are spots open to run some games on Saturday and I do enjoy being helpful.
  5. The most gratifying thing about my TTRPG hobby is seeing all the people who’ve connected with each other through something I’ve done in the space.
  6. I actually managed to complete all four reviews. I even created a play list. Should I do this next year? Do you have any super hero RPG suggestions?
  7. I have some fun interviews set up for PaxU. This is the first year I’ve got some scheduled!
  8. I may have purchased my own Christmas presents on Black Friday. That’s not true. I definitely purchased my own Christmas presents on Black Friday. One shipment has arrived, and another is on the way. Does this mean I get to open anything I purchase at PaxU right away?
  9. I don’t do horror a lot, it’s not my favorite genre. But I hear amazing things about Mothership. Maybe I should step out of my comfort zone?
  10. I read The Electric State over the weekend. It’s an amazing book and a really cool game. It’s also depressing as all get out. I was trying to figure out what the game’s primary genre, though, and was having a bit of trouble. It’s got elements of science-fiction, alternate-history, and apocalyptic genres—but none of those capture the game’s ethos. Then it dawned on me, The Electric State is psychological horror. And I think I’d like to run it, so maybe there are types of horror games I can bring myself to enjoy?

  1. #6 – Take a look at https://aryl-ether.itch.io/thefirstknight (and the rest of the Superhero Cinematic Universe). They’re PbtA derived, lightweight supers games designed to be played as one-shots. The First Knight is set in a medieval-ish world where the first(?) super heroes take on a super villain seeking to acquire an ancient artifact with incredible powers.

#9 – You should definitely step out of your comfort zone to try some Mothership. You might also be interested in Ruination Pilgrimage – another medieval-ish setting where the players fight the demonic powers that are constantly encroaching on their world. It’s a game built on the Mothership Engine.
